What to do in Rome this weekend: markets and evening openings

A quiet May week in Rome. The right time to avoid huge crowds, explore local markets and take advantage of evening openings.

What to do in Rome this weekend: markets and evening openings

It is a quiet week in Rome for this May weekend. There are no massive festivals or exceptional events scheduled for the next few days. Honestly, this is good news. When the city is not paralyzed by marathons or stadium concerts, you have the space to do normal things without losing your mind in traffic.

Instead of looking for a special event at all costs, this is the right time to take advantage of regular Roman weekend fixtures. May temperatures allow you to stay outdoors during the day and walk around at night without a heavy jacket.

Weekend markets

Saturday and Sunday mornings in Rome are spent at the markets. I am not talking about souvenir stalls, but places where people go to buy groceries or look for second-hand goods.

  • Mercato di Campagna Amica al Circo Massimo: You can find it on Via di San Teodoro. It is an indoor market run directly by farmers. You will find cheese, seasonal vegetables, bread and wine. There is also an inner courtyard where you can buy a hot meal and eat it on wooden tables. Open Saturday and Sunday, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Admission is free.
  • Porta Portese: The Sunday morning flea market. It starts at Piazza Ippolito Nievo and goes all the way to Viale di Trastevere. You will find used clothes, old furniture, records and a lot of junk. It is chaotic and you have to walk a lot. Sunday, from dawn until 2:00 PM. Free admission.
  • Mercato Esquilino: Just steps away from Termini station, with entrances on Via Principe Amedeo and Via Mamiani. It is the most diverse food market in the city. Spice stalls, Asian vegetables, halal butchers and fresh fish. The stalls are divided between the meat shed and the fruit and vegetable one. Bring small cash, because not all vendors accept cards for low amounts. Saturday morning is the most crowded time. Closed on Sundays. Free admission.

Evening options

In the evening, the center fills up quickly. If you want to avoid queuing for a table in the most popular districts, there are some solid alternatives that work well on spring weekends.

  • Musei Vaticani: Friday and Saturday evening openings start again in May. You enter at sunset, there are fewer people compared to weekday mornings and the air in the courtyards is cooler. Booking is mandatory on the museivaticani.va website.
  • Casa del Jazz: Located on Viale di Porta Ardeatina. They almost always offer live concerts on weekends. The venue is a villa confiscated from organized crime and returned to the city. Before the concert you can get a drink at the indoor bar. Evening concerts usually start around 9:00 PM. Check the schedule on the Roma Capitale website.
  • Via dei Fori Imperiali: The street is closed to private traffic on weekends. Walking from Piazza Venezia to the Colosseo at night, with the illuminated ruins, makes sense even if you have already been to Rome ten times. There are no tickets to pay. For the exact perimeter of the pedestrian area and traffic closure times, consult the Municipality of Rome portal.
  • Palazzo delle Esposizioni: Located on Via Nazionale. It often extends the opening hours of temporary exhibitions on Fridays and Saturdays. It is a huge space, with very high ceilings, ideal if it rains outside or if the evening humidity is annoying. You can buy tickets at the ground floor ticket office or through the official channels listed on turismoroma.it.

How to get there and opening hours

Here is a practical summary for getting to this weekend's addresses.

  • Mercato di Campagna Amica: Via di San Teodoro 74. The closest subway station is Circo Massimo (Line B). From there it is a five-minute walk. Open Saturday and Sunday until 3:00 PM.
  • Porta Portese: The area is vast. The easiest way to get there is to take tram 3 or tram 8 and get off at the Trastevere/Pascarella stop. The stalls start packing up around 1:30 PM, so it is better to go by mid-morning.
  • Musei Vaticani (evening opening): The entrance is on Viale Vaticano. Take the Line A subway and get off at Ottaviano. On Fridays and Saturdays the evening hours generally run from 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM, but the last entry is earlier. Check your ticket for your exact time.
  • Palazzo delle Esposizioni: Via Nazionale 194. You can walk there from the Repubblica subway station (Line A) in ten minutes, or take one of the many buses that run along Via Nazionale (like the 64 or 170) from Termini station.

If you decide to go to Porta Portese, keep your wallet in your front pocket. There is a lot of crowding and pickpockets work well in the middle of the Sunday chaos.
